Artificial intelligence is increasingly being used to develop new cyber threats, experts warn. In August, cybersecurity software developer ESET identified the first ransomware created using AI — PromptLock. According to experts, the malware can collect user data, encrypt it, or destroy it, although it currently appears to be more of a prototype than a fully developed product.
Dmytro Kovalevskyi, Head of Security Operations Center at MODUS X, described AI- and Lua-based viruses as "digital chameleons" in a comment to Interfax-Ukraine. According to him, these threats can rapidly change their form and effectively evade detection, making it more difficult to respond to them using traditional methods.
"We are dealing with a new generation of threats. Although this virus is still at an early stage, the approach is already extremely dangerous and opens up new opportunities for attackers," Kovalevskyi noted.
To reduce risks, the expert recommends that organizations, particularly those operating critical infrastructure, strengthen their cybersecurity and implement the following measures:
- Restrict the execution of unverified applications;
- Monitor the use of external AI services;
- Implement EDR/XDR solutions to detect anomalous script behavior;
- Establish continuous monitoring of network activity and infrastructure services.
