Cybersecurity has become a critically important part of Ukrainian business security in wartime conditions. MODUS X CISO Roman Yaroshenko spoke with the business portal Delo.ua about how cyberattacks on enterprises unfold, why every company is at risk, and what helps to stay protected.
An attack on an enterprise has long ceased to mean merely a data breach: its consequences can include production shutdowns, equipment outages, and multimillion losses. The scale of the problem:
4,315 cyber incidents were recorded by CERT-UA in 2024 — 70% more than the year before
~55 cyberattacks on Ukraine's power grid in 2023 alone
The attack on Kyivstar (December 2023): ~24 million subscribers left without service, losses of ~UAH 3.6 billion
The attack on agricultural holding MHP (January 2025) — the largest in the company's history
Energy, agriculture, telecom, banks, and even pharmacy chains are all under threat.
In most cases, it all begins with a phishing email or a spoofed link: the moment an employee enters their credentials, the attacker gains access to the account. Then comes the quiet preparation.
"Once the attacker has obtained the credentials, they analyze what this account has access to, set up hidden channels to regain entry, and begin mapping the network." — Roman Yaroshenko, CISO MODUS X
After the preparatory stage, hackers move from the corporate segment into the production segment — to the systems that control conveyors, pumps, boilers, or substations. This can lead to downtime, manipulation of equipment settings, and, in the worst cases, even physical destruction of the equipment.
According to experts' estimates, 62% of Ukrainian companies still have no action plan for a cyber incident. Basic steps that reduce the risk:
Comprehensive audit — verify the actual level of isolation of production networks, map all connections and contractors, and assess risk scenarios
Staff training — regular training reduces the likelihood of cyber incidents by 80%
Response plan — define the team's actions in advance in the event of an attack
While a business assumes it won't be affected, an attacker may already have spent months studying its network. MODUS X is developing its cybersecurity practice and sharing its expertise to help Ukrainian businesses remain resilient.
