Valentyn Vyntu, Head of Data Management at MODUS X, shared his experience implementing Data Governance in a column for the Enerhoreforma publication. He compared approaches in the energy and banking sectors, showing that despite their formal similarities, they are fundamentally different systems with unique challenges “under the hood.”
In the energy sector, according to Valentyn, the challenges are related to the large number of data sources (SCADA, IIoT, ERP, Billing, GIS), the need to work with data in real time, a lack of historical data, and low data literacy among operational teams. Data management initiatives often start not as C-level initiatives but as responses to local challenges within individual business units.
In banking, by contrast, governance is a prerequisite for survival: formalized roles, policies, and audits are regulatory requirements. The architecture is centralized, while data controls are automated. At the same time, banks still face the challenge of so-called shadow IT — informal Excel-based registers and local databases.
The key takeaway is that implementing Data Governance is not simply about introducing standards — it is about transforming the culture of data management. Only by taking industry-specific characteristics into account is it possible to build an effective and sustainable system.
