Recognising the risks posed by the outbreak of war in Ukraine and the potential loss of infrastructure for which MODUS X supports critical business services, the DTEK Group initiated a large-scale project to migrate its IT services from on-premises data centres to cloud-based data centres.
We developed a comprehensive solution that involved migrating IT and business systems to the cloud providers Azure and AWS, ensuring a secure and efficient transition:
- Migration of 32 IT and 36 business systems and services to the Azure and AWS cloud providers
- Creation of landing zones on both platforms to ensure a smooth transition
- Use of AVS (VMware on Azure) and AWS VMC (VMware on AWS) solutions to ensure technological compatibility and rapid migration of services
- Configuration of hot and cold copy mechanisms for virtual machines using VMware HCX
- Deployment of a backup and restore infrastructure based on Veritas NetBackup to enable infrastructure recovery from backups
- Implementation of the Check Point solution to ensure cybersecurity and traffic management within the cloud infrastructures of AWS and Azure
- Establishing additional communication channels with offices using VMware SD-WAN appliances, which connected all data centres, offices and production facilities of DTEK’s businesses
- Deployment of core infrastructure services: AD, DNS, NTP, PKI, ADConnect
Results:
- The core infrastructure was deployed across two providers in just one week
- The migration was completed without any disruption to business processes or loss of data
- A high level of security, redundancy and data availability was ensured. Cloud services ensured that data backups were protected against ransomware and unauthorised data modification
- The ability to scale rapidly and flexibility in choosing or moving away from on-premises IT infrastructure was ensured
- A ‘Cloud vendor NO lock’ strategy was implemented, which involves ensuring independence from any specific cloud provider
- Information security requirements have been met
- Businesses have gained the ability to access resources on a ‘Pay As You Go’ basis for temporary workloads and development environments, as well as the opportunity to save on computing resources for capacities planned for use over one, three years or more, with significant discounts (-20–50%)
- Backup data storage is ensured in locations geographically separated from the main production service sites, within the regions where cloud providers’ data centres are located (600+ km), in order to minimise data loss resulting from catastrophic events
The migration of DTEK Group’s IT and business systems to a cloud infrastructure has become one of the largest and most strategically important projects in the company’s history. Thanks to a comprehensive approach and the effective implementation of solutions, MODUS X has not only ensured the seamless operation of business processes but has also significantly enhanced the infrastructure’s cybersecurity, reliability and scalability.
The project’s results not only meet the highest standards of modern technology but also guarantee flexibility and cost-effectiveness for the company’s future initiatives. DTEK is now able to quickly adapt its infrastructure to changes, protect critical data and utilise resources under a Pay-As-You-Go model, which significantly reduces costs.
This project has served as an example of the successful implementation of the ‘Cloud Vendor NO Lock’ strategy, ensuring independence from any specific cloud provider. The infrastructure, built on the Azure and AWS platforms, ensures not only resilience to catastrophic events but also high data availability even under critical conditions.
The migration to the cloud has demonstrated that the chosen strategy is effective, whilst the technological transformation has given the company a competitive advantage and the ability to move confidently into the future.
