Implementing a resilient Wi-Fi solution from Cisco: DTEK Group' s experience

Про клієнта

DTEK Group is a diversified energy holding that includes six business lines and the corporate university Academy DTEK.

DTEK Group is the largest private investor in Ukraine’s energy sector, with over €12 billion invested since 2005 and a team of 55,000 employees.

The Group’s companies generate electricity at wind, solar, and thermal power plants; distribute and supply electricity to end consumers; extract natural gas and coal; trade energy resources in Ukrainian and international markets; and provide energy services to both residential and commercial customers.

Production assets are consolidated into operational holdings, while the day-to-day management of each DTEK business is carried out by separate companies.

In response to the challenges associated with the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and the potential loss of infrastructure, DTEK Group initiated a critically important project to ensure uninterrupted operations for its employees and business processes. Together with MODUS X, DTEK designed and implemented a resilient Wi-Fi solution using advanced Cisco technologies, minimizing risks related to potential data center outages and loss of control over the Wi-Fi network.

The company decided to abandon Cisco Controller Redundancy technology and instead adopted two independent controllers, enabling DTEK to achieve maximum resilience of its Wi-Fi network. This approach eliminated the single point of failure typical of traditional clustered solutions.

Migrating all unique networks (SSIDs) to FlexConnect Local Switching mode ensured local traffic switching at access points, significantly reducing dependence on centralized controllers and improving network performance.

As a result of this comprehensive approach, DTEK was able to:

  • Reduce downtime thanks to fast switching of access points between backup controllers located in different data centers, ensuring stable operations even in the event of a primary controller failure.
  • Easily scale and expand its Wi-Fi network in line with business needs by using cloud controllers and enabling rapid addition of new access points without complex configuration.
  • Optimize IT infrastructure costs through efficient resource management and a flexible model for wireless solutions.
  • Ensure a stable and reliable Wi-Fi network, increasing overall employee efficiency and mobility.

Conclusion

  • In just 14 days, the network architecture was rebuilt, making it more reliable and accessible. The project covered dozens of remote sites and thousands of employees, ensuring the flexibility and scalability of IT infrastructure—critical for maintaining business stability.

  • Investing in a resilient Wi-Fi solution based on Cisco controllers is a strategically important step for any business aiming to remain competitive in today’s world. It not only guarantees business continuity and reduces downtime, but also provides the necessary flexibility, scalability, and stability for success in a constantly changing environment.
